“One of the big concerns we have is for small hospitals,” says Alan Morgan, CEO of the National Rural Health Association, to AgriTalk Host Chip Flory. “We have 2,000 rural hospitals across the United States. About 1,300 of those are what we call ‘critical access hospitals’ [with] 25 or fewer beds.”

Hospitals with 25-or-fewer beds typically only have one respirator, and no intensive care unit (ICU). These hospitals will be able to treat patients at the onset of the disease, but quickly need to transfer patients to urban facilities if conditions worsen and ventilators are needed.
